India - The winter season runs from November through March and is a great time to visit most regions except for the Himalayas. In the north, daytime temperatures are comfortable (70° F to 80° F) and nights are cool (40° F to 50° F), while in the south, the usual blistering temperatures are more moderate (80° F to 90° F by day/60° F to 70° F at night). The entire subcontinent is extremely hot during the summer season, which stretches from April through June (90° F to 100+° F by day). Visiting the Himalayas is particularly attractive during this time. With the arrival of the monsoons in July through October, temperatures abate somewhat (85° F to 95° F by day), but the humidity increases dramatically and transportation services can be disrupted due to heavy rains and flooding.Nonetheless, many individuals prefer to visit in the summer or during the monsoons, as hotel rates are much lower than during the winter and the sight of the monsoons is awe inspiring.
Sri Lanka - There are two primary monsoon seasons in Sri Lanka, each affecting different parts of the country, thus one can always find beautiful weather somewhere on the island. The northeastern monsoon occurs from October through January, with the dry and ideal travel season occurring from May to September. The southwestern monsoon takes place from May to August, with the dry and ideal travel season occurring from December to March. There is also a short monsoon period in October and November in which it can rain in any part of the island. The southern coastal regions of the country, which includes Colombo, experience the warmest temperatures (84° F to 88° F by day), while in the central highlands around Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, daytime temperatures are much milder (61° F to 68° F by day). The surrounding sea remains approximately 81° F throughout the year.
